Ho guardato altri canali ma non ho molta fortuna nel trovare una risposta alla mia domanda.
Sto lavorando su un codice base di test che è stato originariamente scritto utilizzando TestNG 5.14.10 e l'ho aggiornato nel mio file build.gradle a 6.8.7 (sto usando Gradle + Maven per le dipendenze).

Ho eseguito una build utilizzando gli argomenti --debug e --stacktrace per un'attività (contiene due script di installazione annotati e trattati come un test standard). Sembra che il test sia stato impostato su un successo e quindi su un fallimento. Comportamento molto bizzarro. Sembra che si tratti di una sorta di problema di compatibilità con le versioni precedenti. Generalmente lo eseguo su una suite di ~ 500 test senza problemi, l'unica modifica è stata la mia versione TestNG. Ecco il mio comando di shell e l'output risultante (l'ho ridotto alle righe che credo siano rilevanti poiché la modalità di debug è MOLTO prolissa):

Non ho familiarità con Gradle, ma nella mia configurazione Maven di solito vedo java.lang.ClassNotFoundException quando non ci sono dipendenze Maven scaricate sulla mia workstation (analogo di 'mvn clean').
L'esecuzione di "mvn install" fa il lavoro per me.
Assicurati solo che le librerie, i JAR, ecc. Necessari siano disponibili sul tuo PC.

Bene, dopo un po 'di ricerca, ho trovato la risposta a questo. Le versioni più recenti di TestNG sembrano richiedere la libreria guice di Google. L'ho aggiunto alle mie dipendenze e sembra che il problema sia stato risolto. Quello che stava succedendo è che i test stavano superando ma il report è stato interrotto a causa della dipendenza mancante e ha contrassegnato l'intera build (e i test) come un errore.
Ho aggiunto la seguente riga alle mie dichiarazioni di dipendenze:

Non ho idea del motivo per cui non è un po 'più chiaro che questa libreria è necessaria, ma suppongo che sia proprio così. Comunque, problema risolto.
